When it comes to connecting a solar PV system to the grid in the UK, one of the first things you’ll need is a Letter of Authority (LOA). It’s a simple yet essential part of the DNO application process — and without it, progress comes to a halt.

What Is an LOA?

A Letter of Authority is a document that gives permission for someone else — usually your installer or a third-party specialist like GridConnect Support — to act on your behalf when dealing with the Distribution Network Operator (DNO).

In short: it allows us to manage your connection paperwork, saving you time and stress.

Why Is It Needed?

The DNO won’t release key information or accept applications without formal authorisation from the property owner. The LOA proves that:

  • You’re aware of the application being submitted
  • You consent to the installer or agent communicating with the DNO
  • The DNO has permission to discuss grid connection specifics with someone other than you

It’s a key part of ensuring the application is legally valid and moves forward smoothly.

What Does an LOA Include?

A standard LOA includes:

  • The property owner’s name and signature
  • The installation address
  • The MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number), if known
  • The name of the person or business being authorised
  • The date and duration of the authority

At GridConnect, we use secure e-signing tools like DocuSign to make it easy and fast for customers to complete.

How GridConnect Helps

We handle the LOA process from start to finish:

  • We prepare the document
  • Send it via DocuSign for easy online signing
  • Submit it along with your G98 or G99 DNO application

We also make sure the LOA matches DNO requirements so nothing delays your install.

Final Tip

If you’re a solar installer, make requesting the LOA part of your early customer comms — the sooner it’s signed, the sooner we can get the grid application moving.
